Not Every Video Is a Brand Video
There’s a lot of confusion around what a “brand video” actually is. People use the term loosely to describe anything from a company intro clip to a product demo to a social media ad. But a brand video is a specific thing, and understanding what it is (and isn’t) will help you decide whether it’s what your business needs right now.
A brand video tells the story of who you are, what you stand for, and why someone should care. It’s not a sales pitch. It’s not a tutorial. It’s not a 15-second ad. It’s usually 2 to 4 minutes long, and its job is to create a feeling, an impression that stays with people and shapes how they think about your business.
What a Brand Video Does
Think of a brand video as a digital handshake. It introduces your business in a way that text and photos can’t match. A good brand video shows three things:
Your people. The humans behind the business. Their faces, their voices, their passion. This is what builds connection and trust.
Your work. What you actually do, shown in context. Not described in bullet points, but captured in real environments with real clients or real products.
Your values. The things that drive your decisions and shape the experience your clients have. This is what differentiates you from everyone else in your space.
When we produced a brand film for Tribe Breweries, the goal wasn’t to sell beer. It was to show the scale, craft, and culture of a business managing five distinct brands under one roof. The final film mapped the full journey from brewing to distribution to the taproom, with interviews from brewers, staff, and patrons woven throughout. It positioned Tribe as a modern, values-driven operation, not just another brewery.
For Filardo Ercan Architects, the brand film anchored everything in the human story. Co-founders Can and Maria talked about their design philosophy while we showed the finished spaces they’d created. Client testimonials added proof. The result was a 3 to 4 minute piece that now sits at the centre of their digital presence and does the trust-building before the first client meeting.
When You Need One
A brand video makes sense when:
- You’re launching or relaunching. If you’ve rebranded, opened a new location, or significantly evolved your offering, a brand video gives you something to anchor the story around.
- Your website isn’t converting. If people are landing on your site but not enquiring, it’s often because they can’t get a feel for who you are. A brand video on your homepage can dramatically change that.
- You rely on referrals and want to scale. Referrals are powerful, but they don’t scale. A brand video gives you a shareable, evergreen asset that introduces your business to people outside your existing network.
- You’re competing in a crowded market. When multiple businesses offer similar services, the one with the strongest brand presence wins. A well-produced brand video sets you apart.
When You Don’t Need One
A brand video isn’t the right tool for every situation. If your primary goal is to explain a single product or service, a service explainer video is more appropriate. If you need quick social content, short-form video is better. If you need to capture an event, that’s event coverage.
The brand video is your anchor piece. It’s the thing everything else connects to. If you don’t have one yet, it’s usually the best place to start. But it’s not a replacement for the other content formats your business also needs.
What Goes Into Making One
A typical brand video project involves three phases:
Pre-production: Discovery and planning. We learn about your business, your audience, and your goals. We build a shot list, schedule the filming, and prepare interview questions designed to draw out natural, story-led responses.
Production: Usually a one to two day shoot, depending on how many locations and people are involved. We capture interviews, b-roll of your work and facility, and lifestyle footage that brings your brand to life. For CUPRA, we shot across Woden’s business district with a single talent in one day. For Filardo Ercan, we filmed across multiple residential and commercial sites over two days.
Post-production: Editing, colour grading, audio mixing, music licensing, subtitles, and format optimisation. The final product is delivered in formats ready for your website, social media, and presentations.
The Bottom Line
A brand video is the single most versatile content asset a business can own. It works on your homepage, in sales decks, across social media, and in email campaigns. It builds trust faster than text, converts better than photos alone, and has a shelf life measured in years, not weeks.
If you’ve been thinking about video but weren’t sure where to start, this is it.
